St Andrew's CofE High School

Physical Education

Intent Statement

Challenging the body and mind, developing skills and knowledge to live a healthy, active life.

At St Andrew’s, the PE department is committed to promoting participation in a diverse range of sports, inspiring and equipping students with the skills, knowledge and confidence they need to participate regularly in sport, both during their time at St Andrew’s and beyond.

  • Adaptive learning
Students are practically challenged in a variety of different environments to develop a range of skills, techniques and tactics that can be used and transferred across individual and team sports. Students will learn through isolating the skill, before applying it in competitive practice and game situations.

  • Cultural capital
Students will have the opportunity to participate in a range of individual and teams’ sports that enhance their practical skills whilst boosting mental health, promoting healthy lifestyles and growing in resilience. Furthermore, they will have the opportunity to experience more diverse activities through the school’s enrichment opportunities, such as the annual Charity walk and school’s production.

  • Creative contribution
Students will develop their creativity in a variety of sports, using different skills and tactics to outwit their opponents. Often working as part of a team, students have the opportunity to develop leadership qualities. When participating in aesthetic activities, students will work in small groups building sequences that they can showcase to others.

  • Ambitious aspiration
Students will build on physical development and skills previously developed in a range of different sports activities, led by specialised PE teachers. Students are challenged in lessons to be ambitious in their performance. They are given the opportunity to enhance this during extracurricular sports while representing the school in district, county, and sometimes regional competitions.

Key stage 3

Students will experience a balanced curriculum that includes a variety of team and individual sports. Team sports include; rugby, football, handball, Netball, basketball, and cricket, all of which have extracurricular opportunities available. Individual sports include badminton, table tennis, tennis, athletics, gymnastics, and dance. Students will also experience Outdoor and Adventurous Activities (OAA) in a range of environments, as well as health-related fitness.

Key stage 4

In core PE, students will have the opportunity to build on the skills and tactics they have developed at Key stage 3 in a variety of team and individual sports. Students will have the opportunity to transfer skills and apply them into sports they may not have experienced previously. These sports include volleyball, health well-being and fitness, trampolining, stoolball and softball.

Students who opt for GCSE PE (OCR) or BTEC (Pearson) will have further opportunity to develop their practical performance grades as well as their leadership and coaching skills. Lesson will include a variety of individual or team sports, focusing on developing core and advanced skills and tactics of the sport.
